"When you're grown
you will call the sacred kitsch.
Then condense the sorrow
until it's crystal.
One can reflect without thinking."

An intuitive image. This is about the relationship between two women, who are connected in diverse and vibrant ways. The historical portrait on the left shows Virginia Woolf. A dreamlike balancing act that doesn't seem threatening at all, but rather playful. Borby is a place on the Baltic Sea coast in Schleswig Holstein.

I found the image of the boy in the striped costume in an archive of historical pictures. I felt solidarity with the child who lived over 100 years ago. A child's loneliness can be as vast as the whole world. For me, the golden background represents the value of life itself. The picture was created after a visit to the Bavarian National Museum in Munich. The floor in one of the halls there can be seen in the background.

A countdown – an image about the temporal limits of life. The girl in the center of the image remains alive, while life around her has solidified in its structures. The collage perhaps shows how adapting to societal expectations can trap a person until the end of their life. I don't know whether it's sad or comforting that the human core remains alive in the process. The reason for the picture was the death of my mother.

I photographed the tree during a snowstorm on the island of Usedom. It's astonishing how poetic an ordinary tree can appear. Yet, the photo remained unedited for years. The "answer" to the tree (it's a pine) had to be something very delicate. It's a kind of communication from nature. A matrix that is actually invisible to humans.
